Investing in Mycogen Seeds Silage-Specific™ BMR (brown mid-rib) hybrids can, especially during times of low milk prices, make dairy producers more money.
High outputs are featured in Silage-Specific BMR hybrids, giving dairy producers confidence during times of $11/cwt. milk.
These hybrids increase milk production by 4.8 pounds per cow per day more than cows fed non-BMR hybrids, as shown by 16 university and independent study reports published since 1999. Cows fed Silage-Specific BMR hybrids can boost income from $0.50 to $0.75 per cow per day, for almost $22,000 more income from 100 cows.
The bottom line is that planting traditional grain corn hybrids for silage leads to lost profits?, versus planting Mycogen® brand Silage-Specific BMR corn hybrids. The milk response is well worth the higher seed costs with producers seeing a return on investment ratio of 4:1.
“We are proud to offer these products to dairy producers,” says Karl Nestor, Senior Animal Nutritionist, Mycogen Seeds. “They increase profitability, dry matter intake and digestibility.”
Silage-Specific™ BMR hybrids have less lignin for increased dry matter intake (DMI), allowing for lower grain feeding and improvements in rumen health, as higher-forage diets are healthier.
Fiber also is 10 to 14 units more digestible in Silage-Specific BMR hybrids, compared to conventional hybrids. The lower lignin levels decrease the percentage of nutrient detergent fiber wasted as manure and can potentially decrease manure volume.
“Dairy producers are looking for ways to face the milk price challenge,” says Nestor. “Planting and feeding BMR hybrids will enable producers to keep maximizing milk production and profitability.”
