Enable® Receives Label for Cercospora Leaf Spot in Sugarbeets
Indianapolis, IN - February 06, 2007
Dow AgroSciences announces that it has received U.S. EPA registration of Enable® fungicide for control of cercospora leaf spot (CLS) in sugarbeets.
Containing the active ingredient fenbuconazole, Enable is a member of the triazole class of chemistry. Besides offering CLS control, Enable also provides control against powdery mildew. It is considered an ideal rotational tool with tin and strobilurin fungicides.
"Because the triazole fungicides like Enable provide reachback activity against cercospora leaf spot infections, Enable has a good fit as the first or second spray in a sugarbeet producer's disease control program," says Brett Oemichen, product technology specialist for Dow AgroSciences.
Enable® fungicide is available in an easy-to-use, 2-pound-per-gallon flowable formulation. Enable is rainfast within one hour and is tank-mix compatible with commonly used insecticides and herbicides. "The addition of Enable, along with Lorsban® insecticides and Stinger® herbicide, really bolsters our sugarbeet portfolio," says Janice Smith, marketing specialist for Dow AgroSciences' portfolio of fungicides. "Enable will really appeal to sugarbeet producers who are currently using our products - not only in sugarbeets but also in small grains, corn, soybeans and more - where they are able to receive additional savings by fully utilizing our portfolio."
Field trials conducted by Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative (SMBSC) in Renville, Minn. showed competitive performance against CLS with Enable® fungicide compared to Eminent when used in typical fungicide alternations (Table 1).
"From our test results, Eminent and Enable performed similarly when applied in an alternation program with other fungicides," says Mark Bredehoeft, Research Agronomist for SMBSC. "Eminent might have a slight advantage, but it's generally not significant."
Eminent and Enable are in the same chemical family and thus have the same mode of action, Bredehoeft notes. Since only one triazole application is recommended per season, Bredehoeft says either Eminent or Enable, but not both, can be used in a single growing season.
